This letter is intended to serve as a college recommendation for Ezra Edlarruti. I have been acquainted with Ezra for four years but came to know him well last year, as he was in the one class that I taught, a thirteen-student junior English class. Last spring, while he was singing the lead in "The Marriage of Figaro, " Ezra became especially interested in a short story that we read as a class, Albert Camus's "The Guest." It is a challenging story for any reader, and Ezra became interested in the subtleties of interpreting it, especially in the difficulties inherent in the translation of such a story. What did Camus really mean to say and how might his intentions have been compromised by its English translation? Ezra read the original, French, version of the story and then wrote a superb analysis of the compromises inherent in its English translation. His essay was flawless -- his wording apt, and his analysis insightful, logical and comprehensive. Some of our English faculty can't write so well.
Students and faculty often remark that Ezra is blessed with considerable talent. What many of them overlook is how hard Ezra works to cultivate his talent, whether it be the development of his beautiful voice for an operatic performance or of his writing skills as he works through an essay. I know of the effort that he put into book reviews of _1984_ and _Animal Farm_ because he shared early drafts with me. I also appreciate the time that he put into his analysis of "The Guest" because he stopped by periodically to share his enthusiasm for the project and his progress with it.
In over twenty-five years of teaching, I have known other students with talent equivalent to Ezra's. Many of them lacked his good nature and humility, and few demonstrated the genuine intellectual curiosity that Ezra has exhibited over and over -- a curiosity that is often accompanied by his excitement or enthusiasm for an idea, an author, a literary work or the lead role in a challenging operatic performance.
When I decided to set up a debate on Henry David Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience, " regarding the role of government in our lives today, in an effort to have the class appreciate more fully the contemporary implications of Thoreau's sophisticated essay, it was Ezra who was most helpful in creating a resolution that would lead to that appreciation. 赴美國留學 SAT寫作考試提高的技巧
SAT考試作為美國的?高考?已經成為中國學生申請美國大學的敲門磚。為了進入一個好的大學,他們必須拿到一個好的分數。然而,SAT考試的第一個task?寫作?就給中國學生設置了一個障礙。眾所周知,寫作,不管是SAT寫作、GRE寫作還是TOEFL寫作,一直以來都是中國學生的一個弱項。(中國考生的GRE寫作平均分在3.2左右,滿分6分;托福寫作平均分20分,滿分30分)
那么如何才能取得一個寫作高分呢?首先我們需要研究一下SAT作文的評分標準。
一、邏輯分
SAT寫作6分標準里第一個項目是這樣說的?effectively and insightfully develops a point of view on the issue and demonstrates outstanding critical thinking, using clearly appropriate examples, reasons and other evidence to support its position.?從這里我們可以看到,SAT滿分標準最強調和重視的是眾考生的邏輯思維以及他們對特定事物的思辨性的考慮。Insight是指大家對事物深入而深刻的看法,中文可以理解成洞察力。Critical thinking則是辯證性的思考。Using clearly appropriate examples, reasons and other evidence to support its position是要大家用例子,理由或者其他證據去證明自己的觀點。需要注意的是在例子、理由和證據前面有一個clearly,也就是說考官的要求是要大家清晰的表達自己的看法。這個清晰其實就是強調大家的一種邏輯性。例子理由要與你的觀點密切相關。例子理由如何支撐文章的觀點要非常清晰的得以體現。
我們來看一篇學生習作的開頭段:In our world, truth and lie exist in a way the same as that of the black and white. It?s obviously for us to see that one of them is opposite to the other. So[e1] many people think directly[e2] that they are not same at all. But in fact, they are the same things in the whole, because both of them are little [e3] parts compared to the integration. Their function is to make the integration execute fluently and effective, which can benefit more people. So my idea is that truth or lie is just a kind of formation. [e4] What determines our choice is the result can really help people rather than tangle with the apparent formation.[e5]

As far as I am concerned, I vote that people don?t have to always tell the truth, because sometimes it can hurt people, whom maybe you would have helped. 修改后的內容在表達上清晰了許多。
二、結構分
滿分標準中的第二個要求:is well organized and clearly focused, demonstrating clear coherence and smooth progression of ideas.?
一篇完整的SAT作文結構應該是這樣的:
P1 Introductory sentence. Thesis. Sentence previewing three examples.
P2 Transition + topic sentence. Support sentence. Additional support (Example 1). Closing sentence summarizing the paragraph (with the take-away point).
P3 Transition + topic sentence. Support sentence. Additional support(Example 2). Closing sentence summarizing the paragraph (with the take-away point).
P4 Transition + topic sentence. Support sentence. Additional support (Example 3). Closing sentence summarizing the paragraph (with the take-away point).
P5 Conclusion.
現在許多學生的寫作的一個很大的問題在于,開頭段結尾段的結構能夠得到保證,但是中間段落的Topic Sentence和 Concluding Sentence不喜歡寫。單純的在開頭段后舉例是不能有力的證明自己的觀點的。每個中間段的完整結構必須有分支觀點句,支撐句和結論句。分支觀點句往往是例子要告訴人們的道理或者作者要通過例子表達的內容的總括。結論句往往是對例子的分析:?在這個例子中,通過什么從而使什么怎么樣。?
通過上文提到的題目為例,以下是依據該題的一個完整中間段落:
If life is considered more important than honesty, lies can be justified.
A very representative example of this point is the story of Nicolaus Copernicus, the vanguard of modern astronomy. His idea that the earth rotates around the sun and human beings are just part of the nature was so radical at his time that the Roman Catholic Church accused him of serious crime of heresy. Knowing that he would die if he continued to tell his theory publicly, he told lies that he recanted his theory. And so he protected his life. His idea though he renounced in front of the church, he secretly continued his research. In this case, Nicolaus did not tell the truth. However, he followed his heart and he contributed tremendously to the scientific community. Circumstances justified his lies because life is much more valuable than anything else on earth.
**標注的部分為結構提示部分。第一個和最后一個句子是分支觀點句和結論句。Example所在的句子是例子的引出,in this case 舉例完后對例子的總結分析。這樣一個中間段落才稱得上是一個結構完整的中間段。這也是眾多考試寫作是應該注意的一個重要問題。
三、詞匯分
同樣來看評分標準中對詞匯方面的描述:exhibits skillful use of language, using a varied, accurate and apt vocabulary.
這里,college board 要求大家展示出非常有技巧的語言使用,并選擇多變的精準的合適的詞匯。注意到這里的要求是精準和合適,并沒有要求大家去使用各種所謂的?大詞?。
現在寫作的一個誤區是許多學生在表達一個意思的時候喜歡選用一些音節很長但是意思并不精準的詞匯。這樣一來導致的直接后果就是詞匯的誤用。因為所有語言在翻譯的過程中必定會造成某些含義的丟失。比如send這個詞,我們翻譯成?送?。那么在表示?我昨天送朋友去火車站了?這樣一個表達是,許多中國學生可能會選用send這個詞。但是我們需要注意到的是在韋氏字典里對send這個詞的解釋是to convey by an agent 也就是說用send 這個詞的時候意味著自己是不用去的。這是一個因翻譯導致的詞匯誤用的例子。
另外,還有一些不地道的表達。例如我們在表示提高生活質量的時候,很多學生習慣用improve one?s living standard。首先這個表達從語法上來說是沒有錯誤的,考官看不看得懂這個詞?考官是看得懂的,但是這個并不是美國人的習慣性表達。習慣的地道的表達就是improve one?s life。我們在選用詞匯的時候一定要注意選擇合適的精準的詞匯,而不要一味的偏向于使用長難詞。
最后,關于詞匯的多樣性。換詞是寫作中一個重要的技巧。當然前提是大家能夠換用成正確的詞匯。其實,換詞有兩個方法?換同義詞或近義詞以及換詞性。并不是所有的詞匯我們都知道它的同、近義詞,所以我們可以通過換詞性的方法來達到換詞的要求。例如,important的近義詞我們可以用significant,換詞性呢又可以將其換成importance,importantly等。所以在表達A is important.的時候我們還可以說成 A is significant.或者 A is of vital importance.
四、句法分
Demonstrates meaningful variety in sentence structure. 這里的要求是讓大家寫出結構多變的句子。不要單調的只用主謂賓的形式。其實很多句型都可以使用。例如there be句型,形式主語開頭句,倒裝句,強調句,副詞開頭句等等。每個句型不要使用的太多,交叉使用即可。需要注意到的是有時候一些意思可以用簡單明了的方式表達出來就不要故意用一些累贅的句型去表達。注意到variety前面有個meaningful的限定。寫作在于自然,自然的運用各種句型。這需要考生在考前進行大量的訓練。孰能生巧。
五、語法分
Is free of most errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics. 評分標準中最后一項是關于語法的。在短短的25分鐘之內大家要寫出一篇完全沒有錯誤的文章是不可能的。所以collegeboard也允許大家存在一定的錯誤。但是錯誤的數量不能太多。
中國學生普遍習慣性的錯誤主要在于:第三人稱單數,an/a的使用,詞匯搭配(詞匯后面的介詞搭配或者to do/doing 搭配等),主謂一致,一個句子出現兩個動詞以及用副詞連接兩個句子或用逗號連接兩個句子的情況。例如there be 句型中be動詞已經是一個動詞了,如果表達成 there is an example can support my point of view就錯了。兩種方法改正這個錯誤:1,there is an example that can support my point of view 用定語從句去解決兩個動詞的問題;2,there is an example to support / supporting my point of view 用分詞的形式作后置定語。其他的語法問題在這里不贅述了。說出來其實學生都懂,在寫作的時候大家都習慣性忽略了。歸根結底是不認真和練習少了的緣故。
六、如何訓練及習慣培養
看完了評分標準,要將理論落實到行動。要想將寫作提高到一定的分數必須進行大量的訓練。而且訓練的方法也有一定的講究。首先,在下筆前,列一個提綱,內容主要是總論點分論點的表達以及例子的大概內容。保證邏輯上的正確性。然后,剛開始訓練的時候不用掐時間,而是以完整的寫完一篇為基本要求。寫的過程中注意各種表達和語法錯誤,養成寫出正確句子的習慣。同時要注意文章的結構安排,保證結構完整性。接下來,掐時間完成文章,時間控制在24分鐘。在這個階段強度要求比上個階段大。每天一篇為佳。
另外需要注意的是,在所有的訓練階段,大家必須同時注意的兩點:一,寫完作文后必須有一個自己檢查的過程。很多學生沒有這樣的習慣,這樣不利于學生發現自身的錯誤,而這種錯誤往往是他們經常犯的。二,寫完一篇文章并經老師給出意見后,一定要有一個重寫的過程。就像上文提到的一個學生習作,第一次寫完后邏輯錯誤眾多,經過修改和重寫后進步非常明顯。作文一來要練,二來一定要重寫。重寫不但可以幫助學生意識到自己的錯誤還可以加強記憶,幫助學生避免以后犯同樣的錯誤。

[e4]這句話說的太Chinglish了,以后寫作的時候避免用很正式的中文去翻譯成英文。這樣很別扭。
[e5]這句話里有兩個動詞,而且意思說的很亂。第一段不要說的那么亂,思路清晰點,表達重點。不要繞來繞去。 What determine our choice is the situation we are in。

1:孤寂
用吃喝玩樂應對感情真空
平常的日子,除了上課學習,就不知道該干什么。大學教育很獨立,選不同的課,碰到不同的同學。上完課又匆匆走了。大家很陌生,也很少有溝通。能有的熟人,就是住在一起的那幾個中國同學。此外的,基本上是真空世界。于是,悶極的時候,大家一起吃吃喝喝,拼命往肚子里灌啤酒。
更多的留學生,身邊沒有深交的同國籍朋友,加上周圍是個陌生的語言環境,難打進別人的圈子,容易產生自卑感和邊緣感。久而久之,難以排遣的寂寞讓他們變得很孤僻。
于是,一些人大量時間玩游戲,有的人甚至賭博、吸毒?!斑€有一種現象很常見,就是同居!將這作為一種排遣孤獨的方式?!边€有些人,空寂中尋求刺激,利用高科技犯罪。
孤寂的環境中,最需要親友的關心。處理得好的人,單調的生活成了學習的最佳環境。
2:學業
寬進嚴出高淘汰讓人崩潰
在加拿大,許多學校都有30%以上的淘汰率,還有的學科甚至高達40%,成績不及格,也就失去了畢業的機會。這給許多背負著親人朋友深切期望、遠涉重洋來到海外求學的學子,帶來很大的壓力。很多人無法承受這種壓力,就釀成了一些悲劇。
去年,南京留學生張震宇在莫斯科大學跳樓自殺。學業的壓力加上家庭的變故,他感覺無力負重。于是,他從7層高的宿舍樓上跳下去,結束了自己年輕的生命。
同樣,在英國,陳莘也看到兩位中國留學生難以承受學習的壓力,跳樓自殺。分析金錢無法解答留學難題。
太多的殘酷教訓,不得不讓人反思,盲目的出洋留學,究竟有多大必要!尤其是近年較多的“小留學生”,高中、初中甚至小學就送出國門,目的是為接受“優質”的教育,但往往事與愿違、前景堪憂。他們出去之前,有沒有做好準備,吃苦的準備,接受壓力的準備。一些家長光準備了錢,這是遠遠不夠的。還要給子女們準備多些吃苦和經受折騰的耐力。盲目地往外送、一送了之顯然是不負責任的做法!
3:語言
國內學的英語出國用不上
語言的障礙,也給很多留學生帶來了不小的壓力。
英國各地有不同的口音,那個賣票的阿姨地方口音很重,初次聽很難聽懂。而我們在國內學的大多是美國發音,但在英國的普通生活中,常見的卻是五花八門的口音。分析不同國家英語有差異

4:文化

在中國,老師一般強調權威的結論;但在英國,老師則強調論證過程。英國老師注重培養學生的創新意識。
也許正是因為這種文化差異,很多中國學生得不到英國老師的器重。在英國老師眼中,按老師的話辦事的學生是沒出息的,沒有培養價值!

5:歧視
被人欺負還要遭學校勸退
一些留學生反映,在英國,就有一些地區有種族主義者,對中國和越南等國家留學生很不友好。有一年,剛一開學的一個學期,就有11個中國留學生被打傷。有過親身經歷的留學生反映,那些人在路上不經意用中文向你說話,你若回答,確定你的國籍,就會欺負你。
這些時候,他們不敢報警,一是人在異鄉怕被報復,同時還擔心學校會讓你退學——學校通常不管這些事,且怕你被種族主義分子打成重傷甚至出人命,為了不承擔責任,寧愿先讓你退學。
許多有過這種經歷的留學生晚上不敢單獨出門,在心里留下永遠的痛。
6:工作
留學生找工作兩頭不討好
留學生人數增多,學位含金量下滑,這使大部分留學生都要回國就業。而國內企業的用人標準也在改變,不再迷信一紙洋文憑。國內國外,同等對待。留學生失去了原有的競爭優勢。
現實的壓力面前,留學生們需要的是良好的心態:出去前客觀看待,出去后從容面對,不急功近利,不患得患失。社會也應該積極引導,去除光環,也減少壓力,回歸它應有的本位!

三種住宿方式1、家庭住宿?
優點:如果住宿在當地的家庭,你可以更加融入當地的文化,也可以鍛煉你的語言能力,嘗試當地的特色風味。
缺點:一開始的文化沖擊不可避免,你也許會覺得格格不入,生活中很多事情無從下手。但是一旦你克服了困難,你將會有不小的收獲。
2、學校住宿
優點:可以方便使用校內設備,如圖書館,體育館,校內食堂等。方便與同學之間的溝通了解。不需要再交通工具上浪費太多時間。
缺點:缺少個人隱私。有時需要和別人一起共享房間,浴室,廚房和電器設備。
3、自己租房
優點:擁有隱私權,可以擁有自己獨立的空間。選擇自己喜歡的住宿地點。
缺點:交通上可能會比較浪費時間。與同學之間的交流較缺乏。
