An Example of a Good Personal Statement

I currently major in BA Business Administration at ****** University, which is one of the top 100 universities in China, the best university in my province and a member of the 211 Project of elite research-led institutions in China. My GPA average score is approximately 84, which puts me in the top three of my class. My English ability is good and I score highly in my language examinations. Although I will not take my IELTS test before June I am confident that I can score at least 6.5.

I am writing in pursuit of postgraduate studies in Human Resource Management. During my undergraduate study I took courses on: International Marketing, Strategic Management, Human Resource Management etc. Through my studies, I realized Human Resource Management plays the pivotal role in communication and therefore performance between a company and its staff. Thus, I want to specialise in this field, and build an exciting career.

With the ever-increasing development of the China economy, more and more companies will establish or grow their Human Resource Department to solve their operational problems. I know that from a recent survey of foreign CEO’s in China, most listed HRM as the most problematic area of their operation in China. It is clear that people management lags behind China’s economic growth and that companies seeking to become successful, perhaps even global brands, must develop their HRM sectors

As a fourth-year student who is grounded solidly in Business Administration I also have studied some electives of Human Resource Management on: Recruitment and Placement, Labor Relations, Motivating Employees, and Training and Development. In the courses, I enjoyed the principle that good management can promote the relationship between people in the organization and between an individual and the organization.

Whilst studying I have worked, first as an office assistant and then as a consultant in a large study-abroad agency. From my experiences I realized the importance of an effective staff-training programme. Also I found that I was good at and enjoyed team leading and I believe I have the personal characteristics of confidence, resilience and exuberance that would allow me to excel in HRM.

My area of special interest is ROI from learning and self-development, as I believe this area offers the greatest growth opportunities to both the employer and employee and because it is quite a new concept to China. For me being a HR professional offers the opportunity to give benefit to both the individual worker and the big company and this is why it is the most rewarding of business specialisations.

After completing my A-level studies, I know that I want to study mathematics at a higher level; I would like to explore the link between mathematics and financial behaviour (Economics, Business, Management)

Mathematics is a subject I became fascinated with in my college. It had intrigued me because I always get great pleasure from solving difficult mathematical problems. My A-level studies have provided me with a strong introduction. I now seek a greater academic focus and more extensive research opportunities by taking a university degree in mathematics.

As my studies have developed. I have realized that mathematics is the foundation of every science, we can use mathematics to solve many problems. I started to touch maths very early, when other children focus on toys I started to do some simple maths. One thing i remember clearly is when I was in Year 4, my teacher left my class a Year 10 level question as a challenge. I spent a few hours attempting to do it, but was still stuck on some stages. I never gave up. I tried to ask my mother for help, and after I got some tips from her, I totally understood this question, and solved it immediately. This experience made me more ambitious to learn more about mathematics, and was a catalyst for me to join the Maths Club in my City. In this club we got the best teachers. They did not just teach us how to pass the exams, but helped us to think about questions logically. Having acquired this habit, when I attempt a question I always try to find a logical way to explain it. After 2 years concentrated study in mathematics I represented my City in the national competitions for mathematics and I got into the third round. My parents always attach importance to my maths result. They sent me to a mathematics summer school every year, and I liked them because this led me to be the top math student in my school.

Outside Sixth Form, sport is my favourite activity, especially basketball. I like to play it with the local people, because I can practice my speaking skills by talking to them, and I was an active member of the basketball team. This further helped me to develop my interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. Each week, I spent most of my spare time participating. Also I can play the keyboard, and have a Level 4 certificate. During my double maths studies, the balancing act will prove extremely useful as I seriously dedicate myself to my academic study while also maintaining time for my hobbies and relationships.

Two years ago I got the opportunity to continue my studies in this country. It has been a fantastic experience for me; to study in England is a dream for lots of students and I have loved every minute of it. The people, the culture and the environment all sparked my interest in every day living in England.

My personal characteristics of hard work, dedication and commitment make me ideally suited to mathematics. I am extremely eager to learn and discover more about the world of mathematics. Beyond that my ideal vocation would be in the field of actuary. I know this will take a long time, and mathematics is the vital thing to reach the goal.

No matter where I study, I will pursue a rigorous mathematics course. However, I want to immerse myself in a cross-cultural experience in a place that fascinates me, based on my experiences, I know England is the place.

1。選擇留學國家：

如何選擇一個適合自己的留學國家，是留學的重中之重非常重要，一定要慎重考慮。去哪個國家留學并不是完全由家庭條件來決定的！之所以我這么說，是因為對于一個成績普通，作為有限的學生留學，能申請到獎學金的機會是相當渺茫的，這樣留學的話成本就比較高，家里要承擔該學生的所有學費和生活費！因為學習好的，出色的人才畢竟是少數的，所以才會有選擇國家看學習費用一說！

但是對于一個成績優秀，能力很強的學生來說，是完全不需要來考慮這方面的！當然，因為可以拿到獎學金的嘛，如果是全獎（生活費，學費）的話你家里是一分錢都不用出的！即使是半獎，相信一個中產階級家庭也是能承受的吧（你不揮霍的話）！那么基于你的情況（成績優秀），是完全有機會申請到獎學金的！

所以基于以上情況，個人建議：如果你的能力很強，對自己將來發展充滿信心，并且是一個能吃苦的孩子，而且有足夠的運氣！ 我個人強烈建議你除了美國那里也不要去！ 美國！！美國！！美國美國！！

首先我不是美國人，其次我16歲開始我的留學生涯，但是我還是愛我的祖國-中國！所以我自覺得對留學方面還是有一定的認識的！美國的好處想必你也清楚，所以我在這里就不用那些花哨的語言跟你介紹了，我還是針對一些你的情況，來客觀的說說美國，主要會講一些獎學金的情況吧（應該是你比較關心的方面）！

美國留學的優勢多多啊！首先，全世界經濟最發達的國家（幼兒園都知道）；一旦獲得學生簽證，就有機會工作，申請移民，家屬也可同時赴美。留美回國市場認知度提高，競爭力加強，更有機會獲得高薪高職位。

美國可供選擇的大學是最多的一個國家（4000多所大學），教育質量毋庸質疑也是全球第一！最重要的是：獎學金最為豐厚的國家仍然是美國，而且美國的獎學金制度也是全世界熱門留學國家中最發達的！

(注意英國除了知名大學,比如CAM,OXFORD和LB,等很少會提供獎學金,教育是英國的一項贏利產業,性質跟美國是不太一樣的.)

美國獎學金種類繁多，高校獎學金（校內獎學金）分為非服務性獎學金（Non-Service Scholarship）、服務性獎學金（Service Assistantship）和學校貸款（loan）三種。絕大多數的美國高校研究生院，都設置前兩種資助。雖然并非所有學院的此類資助都能覆蓋一年中的全部費用，但多數都在全部金額2/3以上。

2。說說美國大學錄取及獎學金的申請條件吧：

我不去評論你的家庭條件！ 但就你個人的能力及學術背景來講的話，還算不錯的！ 首先是你的成績還算優秀，這點對一個將要讀大學的學生來說是很重要的！ 擁有有一個較高的GPA（學習成績）肯定是好大學錄取以及申請獎學金的首要的申請條件！其次就是你的能力，比如學生會干部，參加過什么社會活動，并擔當一個什么職位。 這點可以體現你自身能力，從而增加獎學金申請的籌碼！

那么籠統總結一下需要的條件：

TOEFL/SAT高分+優秀的平時成績（IBT怎么也要100分吧，SAT I 1400分）+豐富的社會活動記錄

能夠幫你申請到全額

當然了出去讀理科申請到獎學金的幾率更大（如你選擇的生物，可以讀生物工程，或生物制藥等專業，都是現今美國緊缺性人才，以后可以考慮移民……但我不建議，我們是中國人嘛，aha）

我通俗的解釋一下SAT考試：SAT成績相當于中國高考的成績，是一個優秀學生需要完成的一項重要考試，一流學校必須要有，SAT是在非一流學校獎學金申請的重量籌碼。

3。如何規劃學習計劃

這是另外一個值得慎重考慮的問題！你的具體情況我也不是很了解，所以至于到底如何博亦，我還給你兩方面值得去考慮的建議吧：

1）如果規劃自己的學習計劃

建議：從現在開始全力以赴準備T/S考試，要吃一定的辛苦，在能保證學習成績的情況下，利用大部分時間（一切休息時間）認真準備T/S相關考試！ 分別取得T/S的高分成績，（相信你的英文水平還可以的，這些考試一定不會難倒你）然后立即開始申請！

（美國大學錄取要提前一年。如：想要09年9月入學，就要從今年9月份開始申請，一共分3批錄取）

1）把高中的課程全部讀完，并且要取得優異的成績：GPA要達到3。5以上（平均成績85分以上）因為在高中階段的數學知識是相當重要的，進國外大學后，數學部分學起來就不會很吃力！

另外，關于個人寫PS和RL的問題，我沒辦法幫助很多，因為我不是十分了解你的情況，并且說實話，我也沒有精力去幫你寫或修改……因為我不是這方面的從業人員！不過我可以給你些建議！

你提到了你個人特性里的5點，其中1、2、3、5這幾點都是你的閃光之處，這些內容一定要都寫進PS和RESUME里！

在老師推薦信方面，不一定非要找名家來寫，最好找熟悉你，了解你的導師，或是在社會實踐中結識到欣賞你的前輩來寫！
